Mysterical

This picture was created using one of Dave Shumway’s pictures of a Rocky Mountain College Piper Archer and a picture of a refueling KC-135 Tanker from Google images. My process in creating this image was to first cut out the Archer from the original photo that Dave had taken, I then, using the clone brush on the photo of the tanker, erased the fighter jet that was originally being refueled. I then resized the image of the Archer and by changing the angle of the plane positioned it so it appears as though it is being refueled. The result of combining these two pictures is a fairly entertaining image of a small piston aircraft being refueled in midair. This is a picture of fantasy and sci-fi it is impossible for these airplanes to refuel in midair.

This social commentary collage is based around Zoo Montana. My older sister is currently employed as a keeper at Zoo Montana so I get to see firsthand the struggles the Zoo has gone through over the past year in losing their accreditation, restructuring their finances, and losing some animals to other zoos. My goal in taking these pictures is to remind Billings why we have a Zoo; because of the animals and the joy that comes from seeing these magnificent creatures. Too often in Billings I think the Zoo is forgotten and does not receive the recognition it deserves until they are in trouble. My process in taking these pictures was to shoot the zoo from a different angle, to do this I went behind the scenes at the zoo and saw firsthand the work that the keepers put into their job and how well cared for and loved all the animals are. Resulting from the pictures I hope to remind the people of Billings that the Zoo still needs support, volunteers, and help even when they are not on the news every night.

This is a portrait of my older sister Jessie. Approaching the assignment of taking a portrait I knew that I did not want to take a staged photo. After senior pictures in High School I realized I prefer pictures that are more natural and not staged. I find especially when it comes to shooting family members they have a tendency to look artificial when compared to the person you actually know them to be unless you catch them in a moment of spontaneity. This particular photo was taken on the day of her college graduation. The whole family was waiting around for the ceremony to start. Everyone was excited and in a playful mood, this particular shot captures the goofy side of Jessie and a face that pretty much says no more pictures please! I like the expression on her face; I think it really captures her personality and the excitement of the day; however the tradeoff for a spontaneous picture is sometimes a less than stellar background. The process for capturing this picture was just keeping a camera handy at all times and capturing images in the moment.

These two photos were approached and shot in different ways. The first picture was taken indoors. My goal with this picture was to shoot using candle light. I used the bottles seen in the pictures as props. It took me a while to find a good spot in my house where I could shoot without a distracting background; I eventually settled on this location and positioned the bottles in such a way that they made dramatic shadows when paired with the candlelight. I particularly liked how the candlelight only lit up the objects that I was shooting.
The second picture was shot outdoors, my favorite thing about how this picture turned out is the texture of the tree. The light from the floodlight created a dramatic texture of the trunk and also captured the texture of the bush. Shooting outside was a lot more difficult particularly due to my “point- and –shoot” style camera.  After taking many pictures at night of lights that were farther away it became evident my camera does not have the capability to take a clear shot of distant lights. This made me change tactics and I utilized the floodlight to get a close up.
